Neglected dog makes swift recovery after being rescued from Sumter Co. home

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)– The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office says a dog that was removed from a neglectful living situation two weeks ago has made a quick recovery and is getting ready for adoption. Deputies say they opened an investigation into multiple endangered animals on December 31, 2020 after a citizen’s report.

Authorities say they found Rebel the hound and another dog were extremely thin with hip bones and ribs showing. Officials say the dogs were taken from the home on Sumter Street in Mayesville, and brought into the care of Sumter County Animal Control on January 4. While Rebel was reported to be in worse condition than the other dog, officials say she has made a swift recovery, gaining weight and energy in the two weeks since he was removed from the home.

Officials say the dogs were taken care of by Saving Sumter’s Strays, who brought them back to health.

According to officials, Rebel was taken to a Georgia rescue organization on January 14 where she is getting ready to be made eligible for adoption.

Deputies say they arrested 49-year-old Robert Boyle on December 31 for ill treatment of animals. Deputies say he was released on January 3 after meeting the conditions of his bond.
