AARP South Carolina calls on lawmakers to pass hate crime legislation

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)– An organization that represents retired people is calling on South Carolina lawmakers to pass hate crime legislation. Friday, AARP South Carolina sent a letter to lawmakers on behalf of its more than 660,000 members in the state.

South Carolina is one of three states without harsher penalties for crimes committed against people based on race, sexual orientation, religion or disability.

Last week, the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce also called for the passage of hate crime legislation.
