SC man to pay over half a million dollars in restitution after forcing man to work in restaurant without pay

CNN– A South Carolina man who was forced to work over 100 hours every week for years without pay at a restaurant in Conway will get more than half a million dollars in restitution from his former boss. A court initially awarded John Smith, a Black man with intellectual disabilities, close to $300,000, but an appellate court ruled last month that he should get more than double that amount, to account for federal labor laws.

Court officials say Smith was verbally and physically abused by his former boss, Bobby Edwards. He pleaded guilty to forced labor in 2018, and sentenced to 10 years in prison.
