Mother of Jamal Sutherland speaks out about her son’s death

CHARLESTON, SC (WCIV) — Jamal Sutherland was a mentally ill man killed in police custody back in January. Since then, his death has become the latest battleground in the fight over the treatment of Black people by law enforcement. His mother tells reporter Anne Emerson she hopes the tragic event sparks a conversation about how we treat those with mental illness.
