Death investigation back open following information obtained in Murdaugh murder case

ABC TEAM (WJCL)– The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has opened an investigation into a 19-year-old’s 2015 death based on information gathered during the course of the Murdaugh murder case.

SLED told WJCL they’re looking into Stephen Smith’s death.

According to our affiliate WCIV, Smith was found dead in the middle of a road in Hampton County in 2015. Investigators believed he was hit by a car, but WCIV says no suspects were ever apprehended.

Paul and Maggie Murdaugh, a mother and son, were found shot to death at their Colleton County property on June 7. Not much information has been released about the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

SLED did not elaborate on what information they obtained.
