Family of man shot and killed by Richland County deputy calls for investigation into the deputy

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)– The family of a Richland County man shot by a deputy is now calling for an investigation into the deputy. Irvin Charley was shot after deputies responded to a 911 call for a domestic dispute involving a weapon.

According to investigators, they tried speaking with Charley and gave multiple verbal commands to drop the weapon, but he continued to move forward. After deputies deployed a taser, Charley then charged at a deputy with a sharp wooden weapon. Authorities say the deputy feared for his life and shot the suspect.

Charley’s family says he suffered from schizophrenia. They believe Charley’s mother, who was there, could have helped deescalate the situation, something they say the officers failed to do.

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department says all evidence in this case has been submitted to the Fifth Circuit Solicitor’s Office for review.
