Dozens of Columbia kids receive bikes thanks to first Police, Parks and Pedals Community Bicycle Initiative
COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)– Dozens of children in Columbia now have a set of new wheels thanks to community leaders. The Columbia Police Department and Columbia Parks & Recreation Department partnered for the first Police, Parks & Pedals Community Bicycle Initiative to celebrate National Bicycle Safety Month.
Thanks to Academy Sports, 40 new bicycles and helmets were given to students from Lewis Greenview Elementary School and W.G. Sanders Middle School, who were selected based on a variety of academic criteria.
Police Chief Skip Holbrook says this is one of the many ways the department gives back.
The fun didn’t stop with the students, the event ended with a community bicycle rally through the Greenview neighborhood.
Columbia Mayor Daniel Rickenmann was joined by Councilwoman Tina Herbert and other city leaders at the event.
