Consumer News: Cost of rent going up in Columbia, SCDCA warns of scams ahead of summer travel and more

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)– It’s getting more expensive to live in the Capital City. A report from from apartmentlist.com shows rent in Columbia is up 1.7% over the past month. Year-over-year rent growth in Columbia currently stands at more than 14%, compared to nearly 11% just this time last year. Rent in Columbia is up nearly 28% since the start of the pandemic in March 2020. Renters are paying an average of $1,080 for a one bedroom apartment, a $30 increase from last month.

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO)– If you’re planning your next summer vacation, scammers are also targeting travelers looking for cheaper travel options. The South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs says some red flags include “free” vacation offers, or fake vacation rental listings. If you’re looking to book a vacation property, just know that scammers can hijack a real rental or real estate listing by copying it and placing an edited advertisement on another site. Always do your own research before paying any money.

CNN– If you were planning on shipping the kids away to a summer camps for a week or two this summer, a worker shortage is forcing some summer camps to either slim down their programming or cancel them completely. Those still open for the summer season say they are feeling the impact of inflation and soaring demand. Jenn Sullivan has the details.
