Earlier helicopter footage from CNN affiliate WRAL-TV showed more than a dozen emergency vehicles lined up on a road through a wooded area.
A local hospital said four victims from an active shooting scene are being treated at a trauma center. Deb Laughery, spokesperson for the WakeMed Health and Hospitals system, told CNN she did not immediately have information about the victims’ injuries or conditions.
Police have not released any information on the shooter or shooters.
Multiple law enforcement agencies are involved in the investigation, Raleigh Police tweeted. The Charlotte Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives (ATF) said agents were responding to the shooting.
Police also advised residents in the Hedingham neighborhood to remain indoors in the tweet. Police later tweeted that residents in the specific area of “McConnell Oliver Drive, Tarheel Club Drive, and Old Milburnie Road are being advised to remain indoors. Drivers are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.”
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper tweeted he spoke with Raleigh Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin and “instructed state law enforcement to provide assistance responding to the active shooter in East Raleigh.”
“State and local officers are on the ground and working to stop the shooter and keep people safe,” the governor said.
A woman who was at the Hedingham Golf Club driving range said an “unending stream of police” drove by the area.
“I have never seen that many police in one area so that was what really made us worried,” the woman told CNN, adding that she heard no gunshots, but the sirens of the police and EMS were continuous and made it “difficult to hear.”
The woman said police were speeding down Southall Road and Wild Dunes Drive, both near the driving range.
“A golf pro came out to tell us to shelter inside or leave ASAP,” she said. “They were very calm, but I could tell something was wrong, so we left right away.”
This is a developing story.
