USC unveils historical markers at Horseshoe

The University of South Carolina now has a permanent reminder of the events that took place on campus following the Civil War during what is known as the reconstruction period.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)— The University of South Carolina now has a permanent reminder of the events that took place on campus following the Civil War during what is known as the reconstruction period.

Today Historic Columbia and University officials placed a historical marker on the Horseshoe.

In 1873, USC admitted its first black student and hired its first black faculty member and for the next four years it was the only public university in the South Carolina to desegregate.
