A new proposal is looking to limit illegal nicotine sales to minors in the Palmetto State.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)— A new proposal is looking to limit illegal nicotine sales to minors in the Palmetto State.

The bill would require tobacco retailers to have a sales license from the Department of Revenue and makes businesses liable for illegal sales with fines up to $1,200.

According to the American Lung Association, South Carolina is one of only 10 states that does not require a license for retail sales of tobacco products.

Recent data from the association says the healthcare costs from smoking is over $1.9 billion in South Carolina.
