Sumter native Judge Jacquelyn Austin was nominated by President Joe Biden to the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– Sumter native Judge Jacquelyn Austin was nominated by President Joe Biden to the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina.

Austin is a graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law.

According to a USC press release, she was appointed as a United States magistrate for the District of South Carolina in 2011 and then again in 2019.

The seat became vacant when Judge J. Michelle Childs was confirmed to the U.S. Court of Appeals, District of Columbia Circuit in 2022.

The nomination makes Judge Austin the third Black South Carolina Law alumnae in the last two years nominated for a federal judgeship.
