Columbia opens ‘Rapid Shelter Overflow’ during cold temperatures
Columbia, SC (WOLO) — It’s not officially Winter yet, but it is definitely starting to feel like it. ABC Columbia’s Chief Meteorologist John Farley has been monitoring cooler temperatures that are heading to the Midlands from the Northeast.
In an effort help those who are facing homelessness, the city of Columbia has opened their Rapid Shelter Overflow’ that gives those without a place to sleep some place safe and warm to spend the night. According to the city of Columbia website, the Rapid Shelter Overflow was created in November of 2022 and continues to open their doors to those in need any time temperatures dip down below 40 degrees, or under 45 degrees if the cooler weather is accompanied by rainy and or stormy conditions.
According to City officials, during shelter operations last year in 29 days from the months of November to December, the city was able to temporarily house some 2,660 clients they say was roughly 92 people a night. In that period of time, the shelter also gave out more than 5,300 meals, hygiene kits and rides to and from the shelter.
