Columbia, SC (WOLO)  — Depending on where you live in the Palmetto state you may have to start add a new area code to your telephone number.

According to the Public Service Commission,  (PSC) plans to move forward with a new ‘821’ area code overlay they say will replace the current day ‘864’ area code. The Commission says the change will only impact new phone numbers for those who live in the Northern portion of South Carolina. This will include areas that already use like Spartanburg, Greenville and Anderson. Anyone in that area who already has a ‘864’ area code will remain the same and customers will not be required to change their phone numbers.

PSC and ORS says anyone who is trying to reach someone calling someone within this geographic area who has the new ‘821’ area code will be required to dial the entire ten digit number.

The change is set to go into effect in 2024.

If you would like to take a look at full details concerning the implementation process of the area code you can check out
