COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– Columbia International University is mourning the loss of Athletics Director Darren Richie after his sudden and unexpected death, say school officials.
Officials say in late November while in Florida supporting the CIU Rams women’s soccer team in a national tournament Richie contracted bacterial meningitis, a sudden inflammation of the brain and spinal cord.
He was hospitalized in Orlando and died today at 58 years old.
Richie began his career at CIU in 2020 after three years as athletics director at Webber International University.
He was inducted into the National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) Hall of Fame earlier this year.
CIU Interim President Dr. Rick Christman says the loss is deeply felt by the entire university family.
“Darren dedicated his passion, energy, and expertise to our athletics program, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of student-athletes, coaches, and colleagues alike,” Christman said.
University officials say a memorial service will be held in CIU Shortess chapel on Thursday Dec. 7 at 4:00 p.m.
