Coroner: Missing Barnwell County woman found dead in Lexington County river

LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– A woman reported missing in Barnwell County was found dead in a Lexington County river, said the Lexington County coroner.

According to Coroner Margaret Fisher, the person was identifed as Regina Arroyo, 56, of Barnwell.

Arroyo was reported missing on Nov. 30, 2023, say Coroner Fisher.

The coroner’s office says the coroner was called to the North Fork Edisto River near Wagner Highway in the Leesville area of Lexington County in relation to a body that was found in the river by a kayaker around 4 p.m. on Dec. 3, 2023.

An autopsy was performed on Dec. 5 at MUSC in Charleston and Arroyo’s death was ruled as a homicide.

The coroner’s office says the results will not be released until further investigation by the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.

Both the Lexington County Coroner’s Office and the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department is continuing to investigate.
