Texas man sentenced to federal prison in connection with Irmo armed bank robbery

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– A Texas man was sentenced to 92 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to committing armed bank robbery, said the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Deveon Nathaniel Gibbs, 29, of Houston, Texas, was sentenced to an additional term of 24 months in federal prison for violations of his supervised release.

Officials say evidence presented to the court showed Gibbs, who was on supervised release for a prior federal bank robbery conviction in Texas, along with another person pepper sprayed ATM technicians as they serviced an ATM at First Citizens Bank in Irmo on Aug. 19, 2022.

Witnesses provided statements that they believed Gibbs was armed at the time of the robbery, said officials.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said additional evidence showed that Gibbs and the other person fled to a nearby apartment complex where they entered a vehicle and drove to Texas. 

Gibbs and the other person is accused of stealing over $77,000 before leaving the scene.

Law enforcement stated they were able to recover around $55,000 along Gibbs’ flight path and clothing that contained Gibbs’ DNA.

Gibbs was held without bond and pleaded guilty to the single-count indictment.

He was sentenced by United States District Judge Cameron Currie to 92 months in federal prison to be followed by a five-year term of court-ordered supervision for the Aug. 2022 armed bank robbery.

Gibbs was also sentenced to an additional 24 months of imprisonment to run consecutively for his violations of the terms of his supervised release.
