Denmark man arrested in connection with SC State shooting
Orangeburg, SC (WOLO) — The South Carolina State University Police have arrested a man in connection to a shooting that took place in one of its residence halls December 1, 2023. Authorities say 18 year old Azaurien Haigler of Denmark, South Carolina who is accused in the shooting was visiting an acquaintance at the University. Officials say Haigler and another person, also visiting the student got into a physical altercation when campus police say shots were fired.
Police responded immediately giving them a chance to secure the area and figure out if the suspected shooter was still on campus or if he had already left the grounds. Campus police say the victim was shot in the upper torso with a .9 millimeter handgun but according to authorities his injuries were not considered life threatening.
Police say Haigler, who was already on “trespass notice” at the University from back in November has now been charged with Assault, Attempted Murder, Possession of a Weapon During a Violent Crime, and trespassing. He is currently being held without bond following a hearing that was held Monday at the Orangeburg County Magistrate Court.
The South Carolina State University Campus Police continues investigating the incident with the help of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED).
