SC inmates complete degree program

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– Ten inmates at the Kirkland Correctional Institute walked across the stage to receive their college diplomas.

Through a partnership between the South Carolina Department of Corrections and Columbia International University the men received their associates of arts degrees to become associate chaplains.

The two-year program which is entirely funded by donors, gives inmates a chance to take classes in theology, history, english and other subjects.

Since the program began in 2007, 195 men and women across the state have received their degree.

Some officials say this results in lower recidivism rates.
