IRS restarts back tax reminders post-covid pause
(CNN)– People and groups who owe back taxes will soon get a reminder from the Internal Revenue Service in the mail.
The IRS stopped sending reminders in February of last year as the agency was dealing with a major backlog out of the pandemic.
But now the agency will send out notices and offer penalty relief to nearly five million people, businesses and tax exempt organizations.
The IRS Commissioners says offering the penalty relief is quote “ a commonsense approach to help people in the situation.”
But only certain taxpayers will be eligible.
The agency will only work with delinquent taxpayers who owe less than one hundred thousand dollars in back taxes.
And it will only apply to people late on paying debts from their 2020 and 2021 returns.
