Christmas trees have gotten a lot less real in recent decades

(CNN)– Picking out a live Christmas tree is still a holiday tradition for some Americans but in recent decades, Christmas trees have become a lot less real.

According to a survey from the American Christmas Tree Association, 77% of Americans who display a Christmas tree say they opt for an artificial one.

The shift to fake trees has been steady since the mid-90s and spiked in 2021.

According to the Real Christmas Tree Board, the natural Christmas tree industry has been in a slow decline for over 40 to 50 years.
