Mickey Mouse goes into the public domain on January 1

(CNN)– Disney Fans could soon see a slew of new products and movies possibly at a lower price.

That’s because the earliest version of Mickey Mouse goes into the public domain on January 1st.

It’s not the modern Mickey people see these days but rather the stick-legged mouse from “Steamboat Willie”.

Minnie Mouse and other characters from the 1920’s animation will go into public domain too.

Disney is known for taking legal action to protect its brand so experts predict it’ll rein in what it can.
