Lexington County coroner identifies man hit during police pursuit

LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– The Lexington County coroner has identified the person who died after a police pursuit in the Cayce area of Lexington County, said the coroner’s office.

The pursuit happened near the 114-mile marker of I-26 around 11:40 p.m. on Friday, December 29, 2023.

According to Coroner Margaret Fisher, Raheem Jamar Bonham, 30, of West Columbia got out of his vehicle during the pursuit, crossed over the center concrete divider, and was hit by a vehicle going eastbound on I-26.

Officials with the South Carolina Highway Patrol say the man was trying to get away from Cayce Police Department officers.

Bonham was pronounced dead at the scene due to the injuries he received.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the incident.
