Sumter County deputies warn of defrauding scam
SUMTER COUNTY , S.C. (WOLO)– The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office is warning people of someone calling residents in Sumter County and claiming to be a member of law enforcement.
Investigators said the person is attempting to defraud people of money.
A caller identifying himself as “Sgt. Danny Mobley” called from a 803-889-8834 and told his potential victims that they have an outstanding warrant or fines are due, said Sumter deputies.
Then he attempts to convince them to make payments through electronic means or by giving him their personal credit card information.
Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis is urging people to not give personal information to anyone without first independently confirming the legitimacy of the agency and individual.
“If you receive a call from someone claiming to be with the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, you may always call our office directly to confirm whether we have called,” stated Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis.
Anyone who receives a questionable call, hang up and call the sheriff’s office directly.
If you have been the victim of fraud, report it to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office by calling 803-436-2000.
Sheriff Dennis expressed, “Law enforcement will never request payment by phone, text, or email. You should be skeptical of anyone who asks you for personal information and/or payment”.
