DHEC investigating cases of lead exposure from Cinnamon Applesauce Pouch products
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control had products that contained high levels of lead removed from store shovels throughout the state.
The removal is part of an ongoing investigation related to a nationwide recall of Cinnamon Applesauce Pouches mostly eaten by children.
Their investigation comes after the FDA recalled several brands of Cinnamon Applesauce Pouches including the Wanabana, Schnucks, and Weis Brands.
Officials say since early November, several South Carolina children have had blood lead tests because their parents and healthcare providers were concerned about the Wanabana recall.
In one of the three cases, product testing showing lead levels more than 11-hundred times the Food and Drug Administration’s standard.
Parents and caregivers of children who may have consumed the recalled products should contact the child’s healthcare provider about getting a blood test for lead.
