Sumter Co.: Deputies investigating after hunter found human skull

SUMTER COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a hunter noticed a round white object that appeared to be a human skull, says deputies.

According to the sheriff’s department, days before Christmas on Dec. 21, 2023, a human skull was found in the St. Paul’s Church Road and Economy Lane area.

Once notified of the skull, Sumter County Crime Scene Investigators processed the area and gave the skull to the coroner’s office.

Investigators say a forensic examination revealed the skull was that of an African American who was more than 35 years of age.

A review of data of missing persons in Sumter County did not find a match for the skull, says Sumter County deputies.

Experts believe the skull is more than a decade old.
“It is very sobering to discover human remains. The person to whom the skull belongs deserves respect and our very best efforts to identify them and bring them justice,” Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis said.
