E-Learning, dismissals, closings for Friday

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– Schools in the Midlands are announcing E-Learning days and schedule changes as they prepare for the possible weather on Friday, Jan. 12.

The National Weather Service is forecasting severe weather, including high wind gusts, for the midlands area beginning midday Friday.

 

ORANGEBURG COUNTY:

Orangeburg County School District:

Orangeburg County School District (OCSD) officials says all schools in the district will have an E-Learning Day on Friday, Jan. 12.

All school and district buildings will be closed.

As well as all afterschool programs and athletic events, including practices and games, will be canceled on Friday.

Students and staff will return to school on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Orangeburg County:

Due to the threat of inclement weather Orangeburg County will close at 2 p.m. on Friday and will reopen at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Convenience sites will close at 1 p.m. on Friday and reopen at 7 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13.

County officials say the notice does not include emergency services, the sheriff’s office, detention center, EMS, buildings and grounds, or public works, because they have their own inclement weather procedures.

FAIRFIELD COUNTY:

Fairfield County School District:

All Fairfield County Schools will operate on a half-day schedule due to the possibility of severe weather on Friday, Jan. 12.

SCHOOL DISTRICT FIVE OF LEXINGTON AND RICHLAND COUNTIES:

School District Five of Lexington and Richland Counties will operate on an early release and afternoon e-Learning schedule on Friday, January 12, 2024.

School District Five schools will dismiss as follows:

  • All Intermediate Schools release at 11:40 a.m.
  • All Elementary Schools release at 11:50 a.m.
  • Academy for Success & Center for Advanced Technical Studies release at 12:30 p.m.
  • All Middle Schools release at 12:45 p.m.
  • Spring Hill High School releases at 12:50 p.m.
  • All Other High Schools release at 1:05 p.m.

The district says FIVE will operate as normal and students in half-day preschool programs will not meet.

Also, afternoon classes at the Center for Advanced Technical Studies (CATS) and adult education will not meet.

All afterschool programs and athletic events are canceled or will be rescheduled as appropriate.

Bagged lunch will be provided to students at school.

All Lexington One schools will operate on a half-day schedule on Friday, Jan. 12, 2024, as severe weather is once again predicted for our area. The National Weather Service is predicting wind gusts increasing to over 40 mph starting around 3-4 p.m., with the potential for severe thunderstorms mainly 4-8 p.m. As we have shared previously, S.C. Department of Education transportation officials recommend limiting school bus operations in these conditions. By operating on a half-day schedule on Friday, our bus drivers should be able to complete all of their routes by 3 p.m.

 

LEXINGTON COUNTY:

Lexington School District One:

School officials for Lexington One has announced early dismissal on Friday, Jan. 12 as follows:

  • Elementary Schools (including full day preschool classes) dismiss at 11:20 a.m.

    • Pre-school half-day classes, both morning and afternoon sessions, are canceled.

  • Middle Schools: All middle schools, except GMS, dismiss at 12:05 p.m. GMS dismisses at 12:15 p.m.

  • High Schools: LHS, WKHS and RBHS dismiss at 12:45 p.m. PHS and GHS dismiss at 12:25 p.m.

Lexington School District Four:

District officials have announced that all Lexington Four schools will transition to early dismissal on Friday, Jan. 12.

Additionally, all afterschool activities and athletics are canceled.

Half-Day Schedule:

Early Childhood Center  – 10:30 a.m.

Sandhills Primary/Elementary – 10:45 a.m.

Frances Mack Intermediate – 12:00 p.m.

Sandhills Middle School – 11:30 a.m.

Swansea High Freshman Academy – 11:45 a.m.

Swansea High – 12:00 p.m.

Lexington School District Three:

Lexington County School District Three will release students early on Friday, Jan. 12, due to the possible severe weather.

District officials say students will dismiss using the schedule below:

B-L Primary School will dismiss students at 11:00 am.

B-L Elementary School will dismiss students at 11:15 am.

B-L Middle School will dismiss students at 11:45 am.

B-L High School will dismiss students at 12:00 pm.

All afterschool-related activities, including scheduled meetings, classes, practices and athletic games are canceled as well.

All of schools will resume their regular schedules on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

Lexington School District Two:

Due to forecasts of severe weather that could make bus travel hazardous, Lexington Two schools will dismiss early on Friday, Jan. 12, says the school district.

Schedule for early dismissal times below:

Friday’s early release times are 1 p.m. for elementary schools, 2 p.m. for middle and high schools.

All afternoon and evening activities are canceled on Friday, including athletic events, extracurricular activities, after-school programs, and adult education classes.

NEWBERRY COUNTY:

School District of Newberry County:

Due to the threat of strong thunderstorms with high winds on Friday, Jan. 12, the School District of Newberry County will have early dismissal, says the school district.

Elementary students will be released at 12:00 p.m. and middle and high school students at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 12.

All after school events are canceled, including all athletic games and practices and Boys and Girls Club after school care.

 

RICHLAND COUNTY:

Richland County School District One:

Due to the threat of severe weather on Friday, Jan. 12, the day will be an early release day for Richland One students.

District officials say students and staff should report at their normal start times.

Also, afterschool programs and activities will be held as scheduled.

Richland County School District Two:

Richland Two schools will dismiss early on Friday, Jan. 12, due to the possibility of severe weather.

All school buildings and district facilities will close early and all after-school activities and programs will be canceled.

Elementary schools will dismiss at 12:30 p.m., middle schools will dismiss at 1:15 p.m., and high schools will dismiss at 2 p.m.

 

SUMTER COUNTY:

Sumter School District:

Due to the threat of strong winds and severe weather Sumter School District schools will have a half day for all students and staff on Friday.

Elementary schools will dismiss at 11 a.m., middle schools will dismiss at 11:30 a.m., and high schools will dismiss at 12:30 p.m.

Students will receive a bagged lunch prior to dismissal, and all after school activities are canceled, stated school district officials.

Morris College:

Due to the threat of inclement weather, Morris College campus will close at 1:00 p.m. today for all in-person classes and activities for faculty, staff, and students.

The college says virtual classes scheduled for today will continue in their remote format.

 

CALHOUN COUNTY:

Calhoun County Public School District:

Due to the possible inclement weather, Friday will be an eLearning Day for students in the district, said a Facebook post on the school district’s page.

LEE COUNTY:

Lee County School District:

Possible severe weather conditions on Friday, Jan. 12 had made the district announce an early dismissal day.
Elementary schools will dismiss at 11:30 a.m., Lee Central Middle School will dismiss at 12:00 p.m., and Lee Central High School will dismiss at 12:15 p.m.

KERSHAW COUNTY:

Kershaw County School District:

With the threat of strong wind gusts and possible severe weather all Kershaw County School District (KCSD) schools and offices will close early on Friday, Jan. 12.

Elementary schools will dismiss at 11:30 a.m., middle schools at 11:45 a.m. and high schools at noon.

Breakfast and lunch will be served to the students and  the district office will close at 1 p.m., stated the district.

Morning Woolard Technology Center and morning adult education students will attend class and dismiss at their regular times.

Students in preschool special needs programs will not attend school.

All KCSD child care programs, extracurricular and after-school activities — including sports practices and games — are also canceled, as well as after school and evening district meetings.
