TSA releases data for number of firearms found at SC security checkpoints in 2023
COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– The Transportation Security Administration has released new data showing how many firearms were discovered in carry-on luggage in 2023.
According to a press release, Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers at South Carolina airports discovered a total of 87 firearms in travelers’ carry-on luggage in 2023 which is a new annual record for the state.
Officials say each of the firearms were discovered by TSA officers during routine screenings at airport security checkpoints.
In 2023, the TSA screened around 7.33 million departing travelers at the six commercial South Carolina airports.
Nationwide, a firearm was detected for every 127,447 passengers screened.
In South Carolina, the rate was even higher with one firearm discovered for every 84,349 passengers screened, according to the press release.
Greenville International topped the list for the most firearms found in the state at 32.
Charleston’s airport followed behind with 27.
The Columbia Metropolitan Airport was listed as fourth with 11 firearms found.
