VP Harris addressed SC residents at ‘King Day at the Dome’

COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — With the South Carolina Democratic Primary just weeks away, Vice-President Kamala Harris addressed Palmetto State residents urging them to exercise their right to vote.

“As Dr. King wrote in the letter from a Birmingham jail, the goal of America is freedom,” the vice-president said.

In her speech at the statehouse, Harris said that the freedoms of many Americans are under threat and that it’s an important year to go out and vote.

“In states across our nation, extremists attack the sacred freedom to vote,” she said. “They’ve passed laws to ban drop boxes, limit early voting and restrict absentee ballots.”

The vice president also spoke against book bans, laws targeting transgender people and the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade.

“This generation has witnessed the highest court in our land take a Constitutional right that had been recognized from the women of America,” Harris said.

Many in the audience came out hours before the vice-president arrived to hear her speak.

“She did impress me,” said Columbia resident Tara Smalls. “I’m glad I came out to see her.”

“I like her positive message,” said Johnathan Kirkwood, Columbia resident. “I also like her call to action to go out and vote.”

“It’s the tool that we have right now,” Smalls said. “It’s our right to go out and do what we have to do. We have to go out and vote.”

“We were born for a time such as this,” the vice-president said. “With faith, hope and optimism, we will fight. When we fight, we win.”

Many in the audience agree with the vice president that while America has made strides towards equality, there is still a lot of work to be done.
