Newberry Co. Coroner identifies victim of deadly Prosperity boat crash

Newberry Co., SC (WOLO) — Newberry County Coroner, Laura Kneece is releasing new information concerning a boating accident that took place last week. Officials say the accident occured at the same time a fishing championship was being held along Dreher Island State Park. According to Kneece, the victim has been identified as 21-year-old Johnathan Brian of Shelbyville, Kentucky.
Kneece confirms Brian was one of several people on board when the boat crashed in the Prosperity area of Newberry County just after one in the afternoon January 25, 2024.
According to the Coroner’s office, Brian who along with the other occupants of the boat were pulled from the water and taken to Prisma Health fought for five days before he was pronounced dead Tuesday morning. According to the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office there were several people injured in the boat accident, but there is no word yet on the condition of the other victims pulled from the water at this time.
The Newberry County Coroner’s Office along with the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (DNR), who is the primary investigating agency, will continue their investigation into the deadly accident.
