SC Lawmakers seek to opt-in food program

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– A group of Democratic state lawmakers are heading to Washington D.C. to ask congress for a waiver to opt-in to the summer food program.

The group which includes Richland County Representative Jermaine Johnson will hold a series of meetings with the state’s congressional members and staff.

The meetings will be to discuss the need for a waiver for South Carolina to participate in the program that provides federal aid to ensure children receive meals during the summer months.

Previously, Governor Henry McMaster announced the state would not participate in the program in an effort to move past Covid-era provisions.
