Letter from Claflin University President following school’s lockdown:

Dear Campus Community:
Earlier today, a shooting incident occurred on the campus of South Carolina State University. Following this unfortunate event, a South Carolina State student, while seeking safety, ran into our dining hall. The student suffered minor injuries from broken glass but is now safe and receiving care.

This incident caused understandable panic and distress among our community members. In response to this incident, we took immediate and proactive steps to ensure the safety and security of all individuals on campus. We promptly notified the campus community, initiated a lockdown, and our campus officers quickly responded to the situation. These actions were taken out of an abundance of caution to manage the potential threat and to secure the campus.

I want to reassure you that the safety of our students, faculty, and staff remains our highest priority. Our quick response and the measures we have implemented are part of our ongoing commitment to maintain a safe and secure campus environment.

To address any concerns, answer questions, and discuss our campus safety protocols, Dr. Durant along with Student Government Association (SGA) and Student Activities Board (SAB) leadership will host an all-campus meeting tonight at 6 pm in WVM. This meeting will provide an opportunity for us to come together, share information, and discuss our values as a Claflin community.

As always, our goal is to keep our students and the campus safe. We are here to support you and are committed to continuing to take all necessary measures to ensure your well-being.

I look forward to seeing you at tonight’s meeting.
