RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. (WOLO)– Once again a guard at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center (ASGDC) was arrested for misconduct in office, said the Richland County Sheriff’s Department (RCSD).
Wendell Sholar is charged with assault and battery high and aggravated nature, assault 3rd degree and three counts of misconduct in office.
Sholar is accused of dragging an inmate up the stairs, slamming him up against a wall and then punching him several times with a closed fist.
Investigators said the Jan. 18, 2024, incident happened when the guard was helping other guards try to control an inmate.
During the incident he was held back and removed from the inmate’s cell. On the following day he was placed on leave.
While RCSD investigators were working on the incident, they discovered an Oct. 17, 2023, incident where Sholar was struggling with an inmate who he shoved him in his cell and onto his bed.
Investigators said during this incident Sholar punched the inmate several times in the head and upper torso.
He is currently booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
“We will continue to hold those accountable whether they are inmates or correctional officers. The law applies to everyone,” Sheriff Lott said.
