US retail sales declined in January by much more than expected

(CNN)– Spending at retailers in the U.S. tumbled much more than expected in January.

Big spending during the holidays coupled with cold water across the country could be two factors into less spending.

The commerce department reports retail sales which includes spending on all goods and food services fell eight-tenths of a percent in January.

That’s well below the tenth of a percent decline economists were expecting.

It’s the second decline over the last 10 months.
