Richland One Career & Technical Education preparing Midlands students for the workforce!
COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO): February is Career and Technical Education Month (CTE) and Richland School District One is spreading awareness of its programs available to high school students as they prepare to enter the workforce.
CTE allows students to develop their skills and receive training that will prepare them for the workforce, college, or military service after high school.
Heyward Career and Technology Center (HCTC) Principal, Craig Washington, says programs available include Media Production, Culinary Arts, Barbering, Auto Tech, Cosmetology, and so much more. These courses allow students to get certifications and head into the workplace.
Richland One CTE Director Chris Dinkins says he’s seen a shift in students opting out of 4-year degrees, and instead choosing these technical career fields. “Students have even gone on to complete a 4 year degree and not be satisfied by the work that they’re doing in their field, and they come back and go to a two year college to pick up the technical trades. Students are realizing that it’s not so much the money I make, but now it’s about satisfaction of the job. And that’s part of what we do; try to expose students to different careers so they can find a career they’re really passionate about, something they love doing,” says Dinkins.
Dinkins advises students across the district to speak with their guidance counselors about their career interests to help get them set up on the technical path.

HCTC to host Richland One middle & elementary for campus tours throughout February, March, and April.
CTE Career Signing Day events throughout the month at all R1 high schools.
March 23rd, 2024 – HCTC Family and Friend Day, 11:00 am-3:00 pm to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of HCTC’s role in CTE.
April 18th, 2024 – Richland One CTE Completer Ceremony @ Eau Claire High School
April 19th, 2024 – 2024 Opportunity Fair @ Heyward Career & Technology Center (Hiring Fair for Richland One Class of 2024 graduates)
