Celebrate Black History Month with these events in the Midlands

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– The month of February is known as Black History Month and is an annual observed in the United States to celebrate the history and future of the African American culture. Here in the Midlands there are events and experiences that highlights African American history in the area. From Black History tours to parades, you can celebrate Black history in multiple ways this month.

 

Columbia SC 63:

Columbia SC 63 is providing Our Story Matters Black History Month tours. The tours are free on every Sunday of the month beginning at 2 p.m.

Anyone looking to take a group on the tour is asked to reach out by email or message the organization through any of their social media platforms to secure your spot.

 

19th Annual Black History Parade & Festival:

The City of Columbia and Karamu is hosting the 19th annual Black History Parade and Festival on Saturday, Feb.24.

The event takes place at 2300 Greene Street from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.

 

Black History Month at the Nick:

The Nickelodeon Theater is inviting everyone to celebrate Black History Month this February with a film series highlighting black artistry and excellence. This film series is in collaboration with the SC Commission for Minority Affairs, the Richland County Bar Association, Preach Jacobs, Benedict College, and more.

The film series runs from Feb. 26 through Feb. 29 and will be showcasing films like “Marshall” and the “Summer of Soul”. For more information click here.

 

Irmo’s Black History Month Celebration:

There will be a Black History Month celebration in Irmo on Saturday, February 24, from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.

The African American Historical Society of Irmo is hosting its first annual Celebrating Irmo’s Black History will be a semi-formal event with music, hors d’oeuvres, and captivating displays.

 

Black History Month Community Book Discussion:

All Good Books Bookstore is hosting a Black History Month community book discussion on “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” on Monday, Feb. 26.

The discussion will be exploring the story of Henrietta Lacks during the month of February from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.
