New survey finds a majority of teachers say state governments have too much influence over what’s taught in classrooms

(CNN)– A new poll finds a majority of public school teachers believe state governments have too much influence over what’s taught in their classrooms.

According to the Pew Research Center, 58% of kindergarten through 12th grade teachers feel that way.

When it comes to race and inequality, 60% of teachers say parents shouldn’t be allowed to opt their children out of those lessons.

Similar questions were posed to students.

More than a third of teens say they feel comfortable learning about race in school.

Nearly half say they should not be taught about sex and gender identity in school but many were fine with discussing those topics.
