U.S. government sues to block Kroger and Albertsons’ merger
(CNN)– The U.S. government is trying to block the largest supermarket merger in American history.
In 2022, Kroger and Albertsons announced they were merging in a $25 billion deal.
The Federal Trade Commission is now suing, claiming the deal would eliminate competition in the grocery industry and lead to higher prices for consumers.
Together, Kroger and Albertsons own dozens of chains, including Safeway, Vons, Harris Teether and Fred Meyer.
The companies argue the merger will help them compete against non-union giants like Walmart, Amazon and Costco.
