City of Columbia unveils street toppers for Zion Baptist Church Square Street naming celebration

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– On Sunday, March 3, the City of Columbia honored a street with a lot of history among African Americans.

The city approved the historic naming of the intersection of Gadsen Street and Washington Street.

It was unveiled as “Zion Baptist Church Square” and “The Historic Black Business District”.

Organizers say the street was known as the “Black Wall Street” of Columbia with many black owned businesses during segregation.

Zion Church is one of the oldest churches in Columbia and has significance as a meeting place for Black people during the Civil Rights Movement.
