COLUMBIA, S.C. (WOLO)– The Department of Social Services online services for the downtown location is currently down due to construction that happened over the weekend, says DSS.

DSS says a private contractor was working at the Bull Street property in downtown Columbia and severed a major fiber line while installing new utility poles on Sunday evening.

The severed fiber line created damage to the circuit that provides the main internet and network connectivity for DSS.

DSS also says that repairs will require a complete rework of about 1000 feet of fiber between two underground vaults.

According to the Department of Administration, repairs are happening and are expected to be completed by midday Monday.

Until the repairs are made, the DSS website will be unavailable including the agency’s online benefits portal site which houses online applications for SNAP, TANF, child support, child care scholarships and several other programs.
