Update: Missing former USC quarterback found safe in Florida

UPDATE: Walton County deputies say they found Smelly safe with the help of the United States Coast Guard.

Investigators in Florida are searching for a former University of South Carolina quarterback reported missing after a fishing trip. Walton County deputies say 37-year-old Chris Smelley was last seen fishing in a blue and black kayak around 8:30 a.m. Local law enforcement is searching in the water off the Grayton Beach near the Gulf of Mexico at this hour.

Smelley started two games as quarterback in 2006 after starter Tommy Beecher went out with a concussion, eventually becoming starter for the 2008 season.

During his time at USC, Smelley won SEC Freshman of the week.

After his football career, he transferred to the University of Alabama where he played baseball and was a catcher.
