More than $1 billion in tax refunds unclaimed

(CNN)– U.S. taxpayers are leaving more than one billon dollars blowing in the wind.

The IRS says about 940-thousand people in the U.S. haven’t submitted tax returns for unclaimed refunds for the 2020 tax year.

That breaks down to roughly 932 dollars per refund.

IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel issued a statement saying the agency would like to hand over the refunds but the deadline is May 17.

Taxpayers usually have three years to file and claim their refunds. After that it goes into uncle Sam’s wallet.
