Study: Six-figure income needed to buy home in 22 states
(CNN)– In nearly half of U.S. states, you’ll need a 6-figure household income if you want to buy a house.
A new analysis from bankrate.com found buyers need to make more than one-hundred thousand dollars to comfortably afford a typical median-priced home in 22 states and Washington, D.C.
Analyst assessed ‘affordability’ as whether mortgage payments could be made, assuming a 20% down payment with a 30-year fixed rate.
They didn’t factor in closing costs, home maintenance costs, and non-housing item costs which all homebuyers have to take into consideration.
Breaking it down, places that need the highest household income to afford a typical home are California, Hawaii, D.C., Massachusetts and Washington State.
Places that require the lowest levels of income are Mississippi, Ohio, Arkansas, Indiana and Kentucky.
