Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Tuesday by way of an executive order a new Colleton County Clerk of Court.

Patricia C. Grant, from Walterboro, will serve as the Colleton County Clerk of Court effective immediately. She will serve until the next general election or successor qualifies for the position.

Grant served as the Colleton County Clerk of Court for 20 years before retiring in 2020.

Grant is taking over after former Colleton County Clerk of Court, Becky Hill, announced her resignation Monday, March 25.

“It has been my honor and pleasure to serve as your Colleton County Clerk of Court over these past four years,” Hill said during her resignation.

Hill was embroiled in controversial accusations, including tampering with the jury during the infamous Alex Murdaugh double murder trial.

Although Justice Jean Toal denied Murdaugh a retrial, amid tampering allegations, she didn’t let Hill off easy.

“I find that the Clerk of Court is not completely credible as a witness,” Toal said during the hearing. “Ms. Hill was attracted by the siren call of celebrity.”

Additionally, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said they are investigating the possibility Hill may have abused her government position for financial gain, especially regarding her actions concerning the book she published about the trial.
