Attorneys for convicted killer and disgraced lawyer Alex Murdaugh filed a notice of appeal Thursday regarding the denial of Murdaugh’s motion for a new trial.

Retired SC Supreme Court Justice Jean Toal denied his motion for a new trial on Jan. 29 in a decision that took less than eight hours.

Murdaugh’s defense had requested a retrial after alleging jury tampering at the hands of Colleton County’s Clerk of Court Becky Hill.

Becky Hill herself along with jurors from the trial testified. Hill denied any wrongdoing.

Murdaugh’s attorneys, Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin, vowed in January to keep trying to be granted a retrial. They said they feel confident they will be granted a new trial eventually.

Murdaugh was found guilty last year of murdering his wife Maggie and son Paul.

He is currently serving two consecutive life sentences for the murders.

Additionally, Murdaugh received a 40-year prison sentence in federal court for his financial crimes on April 1. That sentence was given by United States District Judge Richard M. Gergel at the United States District Courthouse in Charleston.

The judge said 27 of Murdaugh’s clients became victims and Murdaugh stole nearly $11 million.
