IRS: 140K taxpayers used new pilot direct file system

(CNN)– The 2024 tax season ended with over 140 thousand taxpayers successfully filing their returns using IRS Direct File, a free tax filing pilot program.

Taxpayers across a dozen states filed using the IRS Direct File.

The agency reported that those taxpayers claimed over 90 million dollars in tax refunds and reported 35 million dollars in tax balances due.

And an estimated 5.6 million dollars in tax preparation fees were saved on federal returns alone.

The program’s future is unclear as no decision has been made.
