Police: 2 explosive devices from 1950s found in Forest Acres shed

FOREST ACRES, S.C. (WOLO)– Forest Acres Police say two potential explosive devices were found inside of a shed on Sunday.

Forest Acres Police Department says officers were responding in the 1400 block of Idalia Drive around 4:30 p.m. when they found two potential explosives inside a shed.

One was a rocket-propelled grenade (anti-tank munition) and the other one was a mortar round.

Officers say evidence at the scene suggests the devices were manufactured around the 1950’s.

FAPD called the Richland County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad to assist with the removal of the devices.

Once on scene, the RCSD Bomb Squad determined the rocket-propelled grenade was inactive, says FAPD.

But the mortar round was considered to possibly still be active. Both were removed for destruction from the location by the bomb squad without incident.

“These devices have been discovered in the greater Fort Jackson area for years by numerous citizens. If and when you discover one, we advise all citizens to assume that the explosive could be live and contact law enforcement immediately. Never, ever move one on your own. That is not a risk worth taking”, states FAPD Chief Don Robinson.
At this time, the investigation into how the devices got onto the property is still ongoing.
