S.C. Senate overwhelmingly passes transgender ban bill
Columbia, SC (WOLO) — Thursday night the South Carolina Senate voted 28 to 8 in favor of passing a bill that would ban access to healthcare for any procedures that would assist in gender reassignment for South Carolina minors. It would also prohibit doctors from giving those 18 and under gender-transition surgeries, prescribing puberty blockers and overseeing hormone treatments.
Under the gender reassignment bill public funds and medicaid would be prohibited from being used to cover the cost of transition-related healthcare for transgender people of any age.
The bill will now go back to the House for review. If it passes there it would head next to Governor Henry McMaster’s desk where he has previously said he would sign it into law.
