Irmo woman arrested for unlawful conduct toward a child
IRMO, S.C. (WOLO)– An Irmo woman has been arrested for unlawful conduct toward a child, says Irmo Police.
Officers with the Irmo Police Department say they were called to the Irmo Community Park for an abandoned child around 7:40 p.m.
The caller told officers they took their grandchild to the park around 6 p.m. when their grandchild began playing with another child.
Also, the caller told officers they became concerned because there was still no sign of a parent or guardian.
The child told the concerned citizen they have been dropped by their mother and did not know how to contact her.
“As a parent, I am disappointed at the situation this child was placed in,” states Chief Dale.
Once officers arrived to the park, they took custody of the child and was able to get the child’s mother name and what she drove.
Around 8:20 p.m., officers say they saw a vehicle matching the description of the mother’s car given by the child, but the car drove by and did not stop.
However, law enforcement was able to perform a traffic stop on the vehicle as the driver attempted to leave the park.
Officers say 55-year-old Frankie Campbell-Provo admitted that she was the legal guardian of the child and dropped them off at the park around 6 p.m., claiming she was going grocery shopping and would be back for the child at 8 p.m.
Campbell-Provo was arrested on Saturday, May 4 and charged with unlawful conduct toward a child for willfully abandoning them, placing them at unreasonable risk of harm affecting their life, physical health, and safety.
She was taken to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center for booking and the child was released into the custody of a family member.
“Anything could’ve happened to them, and they had no way to call for help and no adult there to make sure they were safe. I want to thank the person who called us, they saw something, and most importantly, they said something,” continues Irmo Police Chief Dale.
