Sumter Police warn about scam calls where someone poses as ranking officer

SUMTER, S.C. (WOLO)– Sumter residents are being warned about calls from someone posing as a ranking police officer, says SPD.

Officers say the Sumter Police Department has received reports of a scam caller using the name of an actual Sumter PD officer who claims that arrest warrants and, or fines have been issued for the person receiving the call.

The scammer then requests personal information and funds provided through a financial transaction card like the ones purchased at local retailers to settle the matter.

Sumter PD says they will not and neither will other law enforcement agencies ask for money related to warrants or any other police matter.

People are being asked to be aware of the scam and to advise family members, friends and acquaintances so they can protect themselves from falling victim to the scam.
